Ocmulgee Mounds in Macon, Georgia is a prehistoric Native American site, an area that has been continuously occupied by humans for over 17,000 years. This is not a park that you need hours to visit, but there are some cool things to do. There are multiple trails leading to and around the mounds, and the Visitor’s Center offers some very interesting historical information
Unfortunately for us, we visited during the COVID pandemic, so large portions of the park were not open. We basically were only able to visit some of the outdoor sites. We were driving through the area on the way back from Hilton Head to New Orleans, and did not want to miss the opportunity to stamp our passports.
My biggest complaint about the site is that we have actually not been able to get our stamps yet. Because the Visitor’s Center was closed, we could not get the stamp while we were there. With the other parks that we have visited during COVID, Congaree, Andersonville and Voyageurs, we sent e-mails to the park rangers and got quick responses. I have sent several e-mails to Ocmulgee, but have gotten no answer. It may be that since this is a smaller site, no one checks the account regularly, but it is still frustrating, and we will keep trying.
While I cannot say that this is a must see, if you are in the Macon area and are looking for something unique to do, Ocmulgee can be a fun and unique day trip.
